Color and emotions - something that everyone experiences in daily life,
were the elements I began to be inspired by. The topic of color then took me
through to the aurora borealis, a natural phenomenon that I want so badly to
see, but could not relate to. I linked the topic of the significance of colors
to shoes, when watching someone walking one day shod in colorfully embroidered
shoes. Shoes are, I thought, not only colorful, but they are also a
representation of the wearer. Different kinds of shoes are worn by different
people; different people of different status wear different kinds of shoes, and
people also wear shoes that they think best represent their personality and
character. I also believe that shoes are taken for granted in our daily lives,
although shoes play a significant part of our journey in life – they experience
the same things that we do, and old shoes tend to take on the personality of
the wearer.
The theme of shoes lead me to embroidered shoes and on to embroidery. It
is through shoes, Chinese shoes, in particular, part of my cultural background,
that I took an interest in Chinese embroidery. Almost all Chinese traditional shoes
have beautiful embroidery, though some may be simple and others a complex mix
of color and symbolism and intricate patterns. Through a study of culture and the
significance of embroidery, I moved on
to look at fabrics in general, because of the variety of color, patterns and
symbolism represented. There is also a kind of simple elegance about fabrics and
their weave that interests me, and the different cultural background and story behind
each of them that makes them so special. Of great interest is the way
Indonesian fabrics and embroidery has been influenced by other contributing
cultures.
