I began with the theme of dance over a year ago because of a
love for the genre as a child. I responded to the impressionist artist, Edgar
Degas who painted dancers. I love ballet and costumes and through this study I
went on to investigate stitching and embroidery such as that utilized in dance
costumes and then Spanish postcards. I started to look at the history and
culture of postcards and writing. I was inspired by the PostSecret project
where people anonymously vent their secrets through the vehicle of postcards. The
whole genre of post cards is a fascinating study due to the processes and
relationships generated by so many people involved in their production,
selecting, writing, and receiving. Influential artists include Paula Sanz
Caballero and Andrea Deszo who use fabrics and stitching in their artworks.
Visible holes, thread and fabric can give their artworks an anatomical
presence.
I began to realize that my work was really about me. Sometimes,
I am scared to show my feelings but on the other hand I really want to tell
everyone about who I am. I can say I am a quiet and shy person, yet I found
that through art and writing there can be strong emotions generated which can
have a powerful effect on people. My study of the visual arts has been a kind
of catharsis for me as a person and it has been a very valuable experience to
be able to express myself freely through my artwork. I am the subject in my
paintings, the little shy girl. Art is a brilliant vehicle for self-discovery
and expression, my two year course has taught me to write better and to be able
to express myself. The research, I realize can go on forever with link upon
link connecting. I will never stop painting.
