Throughout my IB visual arts
course not only have I been able to explore certain pieces of art and artists
that I admire but I have found out a lot about myself and my identity as a half
Indonesian, Australian teenager who found myself living in Bandung. I explored cartoon
styled art, linking it back to my childhood. I felt a strong connection to Australian
artist, Reg Mombassa, whose colorful imagery showcases a sense of humor and
varied characters inhabiting magical worlds that to me seemed a great escape
destination. Working through stylistic variances I discovered the art of the
mentally ill. Wofli, is my favorite, he rolled up his sensitive musical
drawings and played music through them.
After looking into mental illness
I wished to visually render conditions such as schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder
and alter-egos, investigating how artists convey personal realities through
visual mediums. The notion of different realities applies to myself, dislocated
between two cultural realities existing in constant collision. Stepping outside
my Western house I am confronted with Indonesian street chaos, a place where initially
I was not comfortable. I adopted the Indonesian characteristic of smiling
nevertheless, referencing Jekyl and Hyde and the art of many Asian artists, such
as Entang Wiharso, Heri Dono and Chatchai
Puipia who depict the same phenomena of grinning and bearing. Going further I
looked into relevant cultural perceptions of how Individuals do live simultaneously
in the interactive realities that coexistence on different astral planes not
seen with the naked eye. These are depicted in Balinese and Javanese art. I
have employed varied media whilst delving into my cultural roots through
painting and Indonesian folk arts. Glass painting, enamels, oils, mixed media
and wood have all been used in my body of work that essentially is a narrative
of the craziness of a dual existence life in a place such as Indonesia.
