Grade 12 2014- Hyeong Jong Lee

My two year Visual Arts journey trained me to improve my English skills a lot. Good research skills are highly required when studying Visual Arts in order to describe and analyze works, and to gain reliable information to relate to my practical works. My artworks are mainly based on my identity and I have employed primarily the style of pop art. Most of my artworks represent myself. They show how great living another country is and how has the Indonesian culture has positively influenced me over 4 years. Moreover, as I have been living in Indonesia for over 4 years, I speak 3 different languages which are Korean, English and Indonesian. My first perspective of the Indonesians could be described as one word “Laziness”. I state that they are lazy in a good way. It seems that Indonesians are relaxed and have nothing to worry about for them. They truly enjoy their life. I expressed my understanding of Indonesia by making t-shirts and paintings on canvas. Indonesians love t-shirts and it is a habit I have adopted from my host country that I will keep along with many others. My work is about me being a temporary Indonesian. In my large painting I sit on a wooden chair with a cigarette and sipping a cup of coffee, relaxing of course.
I was inspired mostly by the art of Andy Warhol who documented his society and times. He mostly dealt with celebrity culture and he printed many celebrities by applying vivid colors and the use of repetition. I always have liked Andy Warhol’s artworks as they are embedded in the popular culture of my youth, in advertising and t shirt art. I used screen printing to create some work along the style of Warhol and fully enjoyed the process.   I have enjoyed exploring my creative side and I love Indonesia. It has all taught me so much!
