Grade 9/10 2015 - Reg Mombassa

In this project you are going to study the life, times and context of two artists from different cultures who both draw upon cultural iconography to send a message. Reg Mombassa is an Australian artist and Heri Dono is Indonesian. You will be asked to analyse one of each artist’s works as a class and to do a double page of modelled research on the cultural and contextual influences of both artists. This is great prep for Senior Visual Arts should you choose to study it, and an opportunity to learn new and different techniques.

We will produce a work drawing upon the stylistic techniques of both or one of the artists. You must have a message, whether playful or political. After looking at power points and a book both artists life and work, we will think about life here in Bandung and contextualize our own geographical space and time. If we have time, it would be great to have a shirt produced in the style of MAMBO. Thus taking an artwork through to a design and a wearable artwork. Mombassa and Dono used Australian and Indonesian cultural icons and imagery in their work, what local contextual images can you employ for a Bandung style shirt after drawing upon the images you see locally.
