    Grade 12 - 2012 Pablo

My artwork is inspired by women.  Throughout my life the influence of the women around me has shaped my past, created my present and will mould my future. I have 3 women in my life, Mom, and two sisters. I respect them greatly for who they are as human beings.  Men and women share a common humanity, yet they are often treated differently, this is evidenced in many cultures and religions. I realize that not all males view the women in their lives the way I do with respect and awe.

My research began by a study of the moon and its effect on myself, humanity and the cycles of women. On a Valencia beach I saw the moon and was amazed at the power it had over me. My first artworks focused on Luna. The moon and its’ myriad Goddesses are represented in all cultures and epochs. My research into the moon then developed into a study of women as a subject. I have investigated the Renaissance period where the art of Boticelli inspired me. Botticelli portrayed women as almost Goddess like, making them seem perfect. In later research I looked at how Gustav Klimt saw women. He loved them and created works of beautiful power, sensuality and eroticism. Perhaps it is the power of women that frightens a lot of men. It is tragic in this 21st century that there are still ideas held that men and women are somehow not equal.  My two years of studying IB Art HL has been a big challenge for me, particularly the research, Visual Arts has been the greatest IB course I have ever taken as it has shown me much more than just art but also discipline and respect towards myself which I will take throughout my life. I am so glad I have completed this course and I can say I am proud of myself.
