My
first theme idea at the beginning of the course, was feelings and emotions in
art.
I
researched several paintings where feelings and emotions are expressed. ‘The
Scream’ by Edvard Munch expresses the feeling of fear and desperation, whilst ‘Promise
Broken’ by Kris Lewis expresses feelings of sadness. When I was looking at
these paintings I found out that the colors used in the painting also effects the
feelings and emotions of the viewer.
The
emotion that I first looked at was sadness. To express sad emotions I used dark
colors and curvy lines to express these emotions. I used a combination of reds,
browns and blacks using acrylic media.
I
also looked at happiness. I reacted by imagining dancing. In ballet performances,
there are also dark sided performances, but I mostly see happiness and the joy
of pure movement. I watched ballet performances on Youtube, and my interest
changed to human movement.
I
started to look at movement through Futurist art. Futurism is an artistic and
social movement that originated in Italy in the early 20th century. My
research moved on to the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser, whose art works
mostly contain spirals.
Spirals
are a component of the universal laws of atoms, which are always in a state of
movement. Galaxies, smoke spirals, spiral fractals, water waves, red shift, and
movement in human legs all demonstrate these laws.
The
work generated from my research lead me to take photographs and I have used sections
of some of these in my works based on the theme of movement. I have painted
mostly onto a black ground and built up layers of paint using oils and oil
media vehicles with large brushes.
I
have learned a lot over the last two years and now feel very confident in my
approach towards paint.
I
also enjoy the analysis of visual arts and will stay interested in art and the
outlet it gives people who wish to express themselves.
