My work is based on the
theme of water and its importance to our planet and all life. The initial
desire to study IB Visual Arts was to express emotions through art because I
felt it difficult to express myself in words. As someone of a Chinese background,
I am influenced by traditional landscape. Painting in a traditional Chinese
fashion is not as easy as it looks, but I loved the calming effect of it.
Subsequently, because it rains often in Indonesia, I developed an interest in
water because it is everywhere in my surroundings and I was getting wet each
day. Although water is life, it can also bring death in Indonesia with tsunamis,
landslides, and climate change globally. I painted the sea at first as a
reaction to the Sumatera tsunami that occurred in 2004. The tsunami affected us
all greatly. Subsequent to this, I went back to the basics of water surfaces
and started the ‘Water’ series, which is just the wonderful surface of water
seen from a relatively close distance. The simple beauty of it is obvious every
day at the school swimming pool where the effect is always calming. Artists of inspiration are Goya, because of
his works depicting high color contrasts and Hockney because of his seemingly
easy yet difficult renditions of swimming pools. I have realized, the scale of
a painting also affects the viewers’ response. After researching I started to
think of the things that live in water, fish!
I am only beginning to
understand art, to analyze and appreciate the skills and media involved. I have
worked mostly in oil due to the richness and vibrancy it brings. Knowing when
to stop on an artwork is a challenge as I often get caught in the pleasure of
painting. I am amazed at how it makes me feel.
