Grade 5 2015 - How we organise ourselves - Propaganda

Grade 5 Visual Arts: How we organise ourselves - Propaganda
Central idea: The arts provide us with multiple perspectives.
    Key concepts: Causation, Change, Perspective

    Lines of inquiry
    ·       Using the elements and principles of art and design in appropriate ways
    ·       How art creates emotional connections
    ·       The purposes of objects and images in past and present cultures
    Related concepts: information, interpretation, symbolism
In our homeroom we created a fictional country with its own government and laws.  In Visual Arts our job was to create a piece of propaganda for this fictional country.  We had to think carefully about the purpose of our propaganda and choose powerful objects and images to create emotional connections.  Before we started to create our propaganda we viewed lots of examples of propaganda from past and present cultures, for example communist propaganda from the Soviet Union and Indonesian propaganda about the ‘dua anak cukup’ family planning programme.

    Learning outcomes:
I can describe emotional connections using more sophisticated language.

I can use the elements and principles of art and design in appropriate ways.

I can describe how people use artwork as a response to a situation and investigate the purposes of objects and images.
I can study existing images of a topic to be represented to identify, select and manipulate visual elements of my own choice.
I can produce a 2-D work of art that communicates ideas for specific purposes & to specific audiences, representing & refining a theme through different media & techniques.

    Transdisciplinary skills we used were:
    Thinking skills – Synthesis
Combining parts (objects and images) to create wholes; creating, designing, developing and innovating
    Thinking skills – Dialectical thought
Thinking about two or more different points of view at the same time; understanding those points of view; being able to construct an argument for each point of view based on knowledge of the other
    Communication skills – Viewing
Interpreting and analysing visuals and multimedia; understanding the ways in which images and language interact to convey ideas, values and beliefs
    Research skills – Collecting data
Gathering information from a variety of sources such as direct observation, books, people and ICT
