I followed my heart using imagery that attracted me as a
starting point. I was interested in assemblage and found objects which led on
to an investigation of Pop Art and found objects inspired by junk artist Sewell. Andy Warhol and Jasper
Johns also inspired me. I linked their style with stress through text and
numbers. Numbers became a part of a countdown of the assignments and completed
pages in my Investigational Workbook with my major idea a focus on stress. I
became over-whelmed by all the stress generated by so much work with every day
of the school week a repeat of endless assignments. I began to feel like a
dazed mask wearer going through motions. I got into Text as Art through Jasper
Johns and Pop. Text as an art itself became a fascination, simply because of
the power of written language and text and the soothing effect achieved by
scrawling. Text is ancient, and every book we pick up represents thousands of
lives and minds, and the accumulation of
knowledge and experience over millennia. Text should be treated with the
greatest of respect. As I researched I learned more about myself as a person
and began to investigate my place and identity within my family and culture and
the complex family world I was brought up in. As a small child, I was trained
in what was not appropriate, right and wrong, with most actions picked over by
the extended family and sometimes judged. Constant worry has shaped my identity
and my shy character. Through text as a creative device I have been able to
explore many new possibilities for expression. I have looked at sigils and
hidden messages, Chinese whispers and magic, and text itself. Media used are
varied, from found objects, wax, oils, printmaking, drawing and ink. I have
achieved a greater understanding of myself, personal issues and context and a
far greater understanding of Visual Arts.
