Insanity,
madness, paranoia, fear, and chaos are the words that can best describe my theme. My work focuses on the thin line between sanity
and insanity in human beings such as mental disorders, hysteria, and insomnia. My medium of choice is printmaking for I
possess a light case of dyspraxia in which limits my motor active abilities to
an extent. I have a greater control over
the media and produce work I find satisfying and interesting. Acrylics are also attractive, for they don’t
take so long to dry and, they are not messy like oil paints.
My works, are not
of a high quality, or the highly detailed
pieces of Da Vinci or Jan van Eyck. Instead, they are done with expression to
convey a message which is portrayed across different media in order to portray the disheveled concept of craziness. My studio pieces represent perceptions, characteristics, modern adaptions, and symbols
of insanity, such as crazed
glances and the ever threatening raven.
Although I have done a fair amount of research
using many sources, I do not believe that I have done sufficient media tests
thorough my course. I believe that I
have effectively portrayed effective links between the concept of insanity in the relationship of my work to my research. I have identified with several influencing artists, each
of whom was considered insane during their time. Many
were brilliant and merely misunderstood, Martin Ramirez, Vincent Van Gough, and
Edvard Munch. Ian Miller is also a
favorite. A technique has been pallete
knife work with broad thick paint. Jagged, black lines, and serendipitous
backgrounds. I
hope that just the subject matter will cause people to question themselves and
their own feeling and responses to the subject.
Research shows that
most people will experience some form of mental illness in their lifetimes,
just as they may also attract colds and other diseases.
