    Grade 12 - 2013 Angela

    Statement of intent  angela

Events throughout the last two years of my life have had a firm influence on my artworks, particularly, the pressure I face from the everyday challenge of school and parental expectations and pressure to perform. I have learned and realized the reality and cruelty of society. My artworks have developed from pretty ideas in High School to an escape into an alternative reality. Escaping from the world and stepping into a utopian ideal of my own is the essential idea of my artworks. I feel I died to my old self in my work in the Pool and Ghost series of paintings before taking on my new persona by creating a personal utopia.  I researched movements and artists who worked in media I liked such as the dark textures of Booth and the linear drawings of Wu Yi Ming. Surrealism is a concept that developed out of a chaotic post war world. Things don’t have to be any certain way or to make sense and why should they?
The modern Pop Surrealists style speaks the language of todays’ youth. It is graphic in quality, colorful and adheres to few rules. I have responded to Camille Rose Garcia and the amazing Andrea Dezso. Both are concerned with the creation of unreal creatures and unfamiliar fantastic environments where they make their own rules away from societies’ constraints and norms.  Perhaps this is why I responded to them, I lacked a sense of who I am and what I wanted to do in life for a time. Chinese contemporary artist  Wu Yi Ming, Wu illustrates about ancients standing accompanied at each side or overlapped by contemporary youth, portraying the “alternative lacking” attitude of society in modern days. This lacking attitude has a sense of parallelism with me. Thanks to Art practice over the last two years, I am a stronger and more self-examining person.
