Statement of Intent
My
Visual Arts journey began with myself being fascinated by color and texture. I
was inspired by the painterly and colourful style employed by French-artist
Nielly Francoise. After researching her technique, I imitated her style and made
my first painting of a fellow student. I
fell in love with chunky slabs of paint.
The painting was, I think successful but not enough to keep my interest.
I realized after some time that I had to be emotionally involved with the
subject matter to give my art any meaning. I moved onto a subject that really
makes me upset here in Indonesia, and that is humanity’s treatment of animals.
The thought of animals being treated
without respect disturbs me. I see a lot of cruelty and indifference towards
animals every day in my city. I researched animal welfare by interviewing
members of the community in the meat industry such as a chicken killer at a
local market. I took many photographs and was fascinated by the pictures I took
of meat. I digitally manipulated these photographs and framed them
compositionally. I then explored
anthropomorphism, (animals possessing human characteristics). Bill Hammond was
an influence, along with Shamanism and mythology. Doing an interview with a chicken killer and
a study of animal welfare throughout history, helped me have some understanding
of how different cultures see and treat animals. Some cultures revere animals,
whilst many others are indifferent. Francis Bacon and Picasso influenced my
artworks with their technical styles and strong anthropomorphic and tortured
images. Both have little reverence for the norm. Canvass and paper are my
preferred surfaces along with enamels, oils and drawing. I will paint for the
rest of my life as over the last two years I have been able to learn a lot
about myself.
