    Grade 12 - 2011 Eric

My theme moved from artists in society to the theme of bubbles. I began by looking at the unfairness of a society that only values wealth and under values and ignores poor people. The wealthy live in a protected bubble of dreams. Poor people are increasingly forced out to the edges of society, whilst the rich live in a kind of bubble that floats above the problems faced by the poor. This got me thinking of “Freedom,” and bubbles to me represent freedom because they drift wherever they want, up or down right or left, they may also choose to disappear to somewhere else. When the bubble blows though, the dream can pop.

The artist that interests me the most is Indonesian, Tommy F. Awauy.  His philosophy of De Bubblezation and his belief that art works are planned first and then made means that craftsmanship is important and that art should not just be made for any purpose. His De Bubblezation has a similar idea to mine also. It amazes me that this was pure coincidence. Bubbles are separate from everything else and they are quite magical. They represent freedom movement and people’s thinking and dreams. But they also mean a separation from hard reality whilst reflecting the world outside them.
I feel over last two years, I have learned how to analyze a piece of art work and can begin to understand and question what an artist is trying to show. Arts language is still a challenge but I have found that now, because of my studies I have a new freedom within myself and can express it through my work.
